Bridal Party Duties Part 3: Ushers

Quick Guide to Bridal Party Duties The Ushrers

It’s wonderful being part of the bridal party, but what exactly is involved, other than a starring role in the photos? And if you’re choosing the people you want close by your side on the big day, then have you considered how they might support you?

So continuing in my series of posts about what you should expect if you’re part of the bridal party, I’m talking about ushers today.

Help! What does an usher do?

Some might say that you’ve got the best job – your friend wants you by his side on his wedding day but you’ve also escaped a lot of the responsibilities that are heaped on the best man. But before you sit back and relax completely, there are still things you need to do, so here’s a run down of what needs to be on your radar…

Preparing – the best ushers are prepared, so speak to the groom and best man before the wedding day and make sure your mobile is well stocked with the phone numbers of local taxi firms and wedding suppliers, plus details of all the venues, car parks, hotels, stations and anything that the guests might need.

Arriving – as guests arrive at the venue, an usher should be there to greet them, point them in the direction of parking and even escort people from their cars, so keep an umbrella to hand if it looks like rain!

Welcoming – welcoming guests into the ceremony is definitely the role of the ushers. Help elderly guests or those with young children to find a good spot, make sure that seats are left for the bridal party and escort the mothers of the bride and groom to their seats. During the ceremony, make sure that an usher is available to help any latecomers find a seat without too much disruption to proceedings.

Helping – do whatever you can to keep the day running smoothly. This might mean dealing with any intoxicated guests, carrying chairs or ordering taxis. The best ushers are super polite, always calm and absolutely there for their friend all day long.
